Biography
Liam Hemsworth was born on January 13, 1990 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia to his parents Leonie and Craig, a social services counselor and an English teacher. He is of English, Irish, Scottish, and German descent; and his maternal grandfather was a Dutch immigrant. When Liam was 8 years old, his family moved to Phillip Island, southeast of Melbourne, where he and his brothers spent much of their time surfing. He began auditioning for film and television roles when he was sixteen years old, following in his the footsteps of his older brothers Luke and Chris.
Liam’s first role came with “Home and Away” in 2007, the popular Australian soap; also appearing the the seventh season of “McLeod’s Daughters” as Damo the same year. He had his first recurring role on another Australian soap, “Neighbours” as Josh Taylor in 25 episodes from 2007-2009. He had a recurring role on the television series “The Elephant Princess” as Marcus from 2008-2009. In 2009, he appeared in a couple episodes of “Satisfaction”, playing Marc. In March of the same year, Liam moved to Los Angeles with his brothers, initially staying with Chris’s manager before getting their own apartment. He appeared in his first feature film as Spencer, a student of Nicholas Cage, in Knowing that year. Liam also appeared alongside Melissa George in the thriller Triangle, as Victor. Liam was up for the role of Thor Odinson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the role later went to his brother Chris.
2010 brought Liam his breakout performance as Will Blakelee in The Last Song, opposite Miley Cyrus. They both had such chemistry on set that they started dating in real life, which thrusted Liam into the spotlight. He would be the host of the Australian Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards that year. In 2012, he became a part of the franchise The Hunger Games, as Gale Hawthorne alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. The film ended up grossing over $694 million. The same year, Liam acted opposite an all-star cast in The Expendables 2 as Billy The Kid, a sniper. In June of 2012, Miley and Liam would announce their engagement before breaking up the following year. Liam got busy in 2013, first starring opposite fellow Australian Teresa Palmer in the film Love and Honor as Mickey Wright. Empire State came next, playing Chris Potamitis, a security guard; opposite Dwayne Johnson. Next, Liam starred opposite Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford in the film Paranoia, as Adam Cassidy. In November of that year, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire was released, grossing over $865 million worldwide.
Cut Bank was released in 2014, where Liam played Dwayne McLaren opposite Billy Bob Thorton and Teresa Palmer. He would reprise Gale Hawthorne a third time when The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1″ would be released, raking in $755 million worldwide. Liam would be a part of his first Australian film in 2015, opposite Kate Winslet, in The Dressmaker, as Teddy McSwiney. When “The Muppets” returned to television, he would be a part of the group of celebrities to join them, as himself of course. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 would be released the same year, ending the saga, grossing over $658 million worldwide.
In 2016, Liam was a part of the sitcom “Workaholics” alongside comedian Dane Cook, as the Cushing Ward. In the summer, he would play pilot Jake Morrison in Independence Day: Resurgence, opposite Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. Liam would later confess he filmed a few scenes with his brother Chris after director Roland Emmerich asked him to send him some scenes, which they both later laughed about during an interview for the AOL Build Series. Miley Cyrus would confirm that she and Liam were back together in October while on “The Ellen Degeneres Show” after speculation began when she was seen wearing her engagement ring again. Later in 2016, he would play opposite his Hunger Games co-star Woody Harrelson in the film The Duel as David Kingston.
2018 brings Liam into the best tourism ad anybody has ever seen, as Tourism Australia gathered all of Hollywood’s biggest Australian actors in for a fake movie trailer for Dundee – The Son of a Legend Returns Home, where Liam plays the role of Wes Wingsong. In November, he and Miley lost their home in the devastating Woolsey Fire. On December 23, they were married in Nashville, Tennessee. He dipped his toes in his first romantic comedy in 2019 opposite the ever-so-talented Rebel Wilson for the film Isn’t It Romantic, where Liam plays Blake, Rebel’s boss and love interest. The film revolves around Natalie that gets stuck in a romantic comedy after being mugged at a subway station. In August, Miley announced their separation and not two weeks later, Liam would file for divorce over irreconcilable differences. Liam would play Moe Diamond in his next film Killerman, a film where his character gets amnesia while being chased by dirty cops. In 2020, he would become a part of a series for the new streaming service Quibi, “The Most Dangerous Game” as Dodge Tynes, opposite Christoph Waltz. On May 5, his film Arkansas had home release on streaming services and On Demand, where Liam plays the role of Kyle, opposite co-star/writer/director Clark Duke and Vince Vaughn.
In his free time, Liam enjoys spending time with his brothers, boxing, surfing, playing Five Finger Fillet, and painting. Billy Ray Cyrus complimented his art, which became the cover art for Miley’s song “Malibu.” After the Woolsey Fire, he and Miley donated $500,000 to The Malibu Foundation, also encouraging others to donate, to help with relief and aftermath of the fire.
